Pita Pockets

As I have said before, it is hard to find bread products from the grocery store that don’t have unwanted ingredients added to them. Pita pockets are found with high fructose corn syrup, artificial dyes, and preservatives. But they are easy to make at home, and they only have a few simple ingredients! Best of all, they taste much better than store bought versions.



Roll out dough balls with a rolling pin, making sure the circles are even all the way around.

P1090335Make sure the oven is fully preheated, putting these suckers into a hot oven will help them puff up. If you rolled them out evenly (which of course I did not) they should have a wonderful puff in the center, the perfect pocket for stuffing with goodies. Most of mine puffed, some were just a little uneven. I think it would be easier if I made smaller circles, but I wanted to make larger ones, so I’ll just deal with the funkiness.

P1090336I had plans to make stuffed greek pitas (recipe coming soon!) with these pockets so they were pretty large. You can really make them any size you want. They would be delicious dipped in hummus!



You can also omit the whole wheat flour and make these with only white flour if you prefer. I thought the whole wheat flour made them taste delicious, especially when I made them into pita sandwiches!
